Education is a priority in the region. Asheville is host to UNC-Asheville, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College minutes from Montreat College, and other branches of the North Carolina University system. Buncombe County schools have had a "zero tolerance" policy for use of any tobacco product for years and are 100% tobacco free effective December 1, 2004. Asheville City and Buncombe County schools have low student to teacher ratios, and the schools consistently rank top in the state. The high school curriculum(s) better prepares and encourages students in career pathways with curriculums for career prep, college tech prep, college/university prep and occupational prep. Through a collaborative effort with the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and the local universities a student can get a head start on their secondary education.
